DC Man Changing Tire Killed By Out Of Control Driver On I-495 In Maryland: State Police

New details have been released after a Washington, DC man was killed by a 21-year-old driver on I-495 in Prince George’s County over the weekend.

Olumide Stephen, 55, has been identified as the man changing a tire who was killed after Boyds, Maryland resident Surya Padmanahban unexpectedly lost control of his Toyota Prius and struck him in College Park.

According to Maryland State Police investigators, Stephen was driving a 2021 Toyota Highlander when he stopped to change the right rear passenger side tire after getting a flat.

The fatal incident was reported at approximately 2 p.m. on Friday, April 14.

Investigators say that despite Stephen having his hazard lights and flashers activated, Padmanahban ran off the road, traveled onto the southbound shoulder, striking the back of the Toyota and Stephen, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.
